Background of the Study
Mental health care remains a critical yet underserved area of healthcare globally, and Nigeria is no exception. In Kano State, tertiary hospitals are pivotal in providing specialized mental health services, with nurses playing a central role in patient care. Nurses’ knowledge and attitudes significantly influence the quality of care provided to individuals with mental health conditions. A well-informed and empathetic nursing workforce is essential for effective diagnosis, treatment, and patient recovery.
Despite the global emphasis on mental health awareness, stigma and misconceptions about mental illnesses persist among healthcare providers. Studies (e.g., Aliyu et al., 2023) highlight that nurses in resource-limited settings like Kano State often lack adequate training and hold stigmatizing attitudes toward mental health patients, which hinders care delivery. Addressing these gaps is essential to improve mental health outcomes and reduce stigma in healthcare settings.
Statement of the Problem
Mental health services in Kano State face challenges such as limited resources, inadequate training for healthcare providers, and societal stigma. Nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward mental health care are critical factors influencing the effectiveness of care delivery in tertiary hospitals. However, misconceptions, lack of training, and negative attitudes often compromise care quality.
There is a dearth of empirical research assessing nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward mental health care in tertiary hospitals in Kano State. Understanding these factors is essential to develop targeted training programs and policies aimed at improving mental health services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on assessing nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward mental health care in tertiary hospitals in Kano State. It identifies gaps and proposes solutions for improvement. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported knowledge and attitudes and the variability of mental health care experiences among nurses.
